  16. the American West by dam builders, mobile-home denizens and
  17. ski-resort developers; of internal bleeding; in Tucson. His 1975
  18. novel The Monkey Wrench Gang chronicled the exploits of
  19. ecological guerrillas who sabotaged dams and bridges in the
  20. Southwest; the book inspired Earth First! and other hard-line
  21. groups. "The forests and mountains and desert canyons," Abbey
  22. once wrote, "are holier than our churches. Therefore let us
  23. behave accordingly."
